The growth of online ordering in the last few years and the rapid evolution of food delivery have shaken up the status quo. The emergence of appealing, user-friendly apps and tech-enabled driver networks stimulated customers to switch their mindset when it comes to eating restaurant-quality food. Additionally fuelled by social distancing in the early pandemics, restaurants were forced to digitalize in order to salvage their businesses, while customers were left with the options to either cook themselves or order food online.
Despite a rising trend, the Austrian restaurant chain Zeljo Grill Burek recognized an opportunity and decided to expand its business by heading into digitalization even before the pandemic emerged. Looking to create a platform that automates certain business operations, Zeljo Grill Burek engaged with Tech387 to build a proprietary Deliveroo or Uber Eats-like system.
As a restaurant that prepares authentic Balkan cuisine and serves it to customers in Vienna, Zeljo Grill Burek was facing the challenge of listing its offering on contemporary food delivery platforms due to the lack of popularity of such cuisine on the international scene. Being a niche set of food products with great potential, the hope for popularization definitely existed, but the reality was that the early system adoptors would have to be users of Balkan origin. Despite the geographical proximity of their origins, these users have different cultural practices, religions, and eating habits, so the further challenge was to provide a solution that encompasses all.
Eventually, the requirement to build a standalone system that allows for customization of offerings and customer management proved to be an adequate solution. A custom system for Zeljo Grill Burek was developed to support the franchise-based restaurant’s growth model, featuring restaurant, offering, and customer management on the single content management system.
